Cacti in different shapes

A rounded cactus creates a different effect from a tall column or a plant with flat pads. Spines also vary in length, colour and density, and some species have barely visible spines. Combining different shapes gives a collection its own character. Choose pots that complement the outline of each plant and give it room to stand out.

Light and position

Many desert cacti enjoy a very bright, sunny position. Introduce plants gradually to stronger sunlight when moving them. Tropical forest cacti generally need filtered light and a different watering approach. Always check which conditions suit the species you choose.

Watering and drainage

Cacti can store water in their stems. Check the potting mix before watering again and adjust watering to the species and its growth. Allow excess water to drain away freely. A suitable, airy growing medium and a pot with drainage holes help prevent roots from staying wet for too long. During a cool resting period, many desert cacti need considerably less water.

Flowers for an extra splash of colour

A flowering cactus adds colour to the plant’s distinctive shape. Whether and when a cactus flowers depends on factors including its species, stage of development and growing conditions. Sufficient light and an appropriate resting period can encourage flowering in many desert cacti.

Choosing a cactus at ExoticsAtHome

For a cactus that will stay outdoors, the species’ cold hardiness and local growing conditions are decisive. Good drainage and, where needed, protection from winter rain deserve attention. Overwinter frost-sensitive species in a frost-free place. Compare growth habit, mature size and care requirements at ExoticsAtHome to find a cactus that suits your available space.
