About the Yucca potosina - M

Yucca potosina is a tree-forming yucca from the dry regions of Mexico. The plant develops rosettes of long, narrow and rigid leaves and can, under suitable conditions, grow into a striking architectural specimen.

Size M refers only to the commercial size classification. The exact plant height, pot size, trunk development and growth stage may vary between deliveries.

Characteristics

Origin: Yucca potosina is native to dry regions of east-central Mexico, from San Luis Potosí to Hidalgo.

Family: This species belongs to the Asparagaceae, the asparagus family.

Position: Choose a warm, sheltered outdoor position with excellent drainage. The plant can be grown in the ground or in a spacious container, with protection from prolonged winter wet being important.

Height: Mature specimens can reach approximately 2 to 8 metres under natural and favourable conditions. The plant generally remains smaller in a container. Size M does not indicate the eventual height or current stage of development.

Flowering period: Mature specimens can flower from May to July when growing conditions are suitable. Size M does not guarantee that the plant is already mature enough to flower.

Flower colour: The flowers of mature specimens are white and globose to elongated in shape.

Hardiness: The species tolerates some frost, but the combination of cold and wet soil presents the greatest risk. As a safe care guideline, provide protection at temperatures around or below -5°C, especially for container-grown plants.

Soil type: Use an airy, mineral-rich and very well-drained soil, such as a sandy or gritty mixture. Avoid heavy soil and standing water around the roots.

Care

Light: Provide full sun wherever possible. Gradually acclimatise a plant coming from a greenhouse or sheltered position to direct sunlight to prevent leaf damage.

Water: Water thoroughly during the growing season and then allow the substrate to dry out well before watering again. Greatly reduce watering in winter and prevent water from remaining in the container or around the roots.

Fertiliser: Yucca potosina requires little feeding. If desired, apply a small amount of fertiliser for cacti and succulents during active growth. Do not fertilise during the winter rest period.

Pruning: Pruning is not normally required. Remove only completely dry or damaged leaves and, if desired, cut a spent flower stalk close to the base.

Repotting: Repot preferably in spring once the roots have filled the container. Use a pot that is only slightly larger, with ample drainage holes, and fill it with a mineral and well-drained substrate.

Humidity: Low to average humidity is suitable. Ensure good ventilation and avoid prolonged damp conditions around the foliage and growing point.

Special features: The rigid leaves end in sharp points. Wear gloves when caring for or moving the plant and position it away from busy walkways.
