About the Yucca filifera - M

Yucca filifera is an evergreen, tree-forming yucca with a bold architectural appearance. The species forms dense rosettes of rigid, sword-shaped green leaves with sharp tips and conspicuous white, curling threads along the margins. Old specimens can develop a tall, strongly branched trunk, with each branch ending in a leaf rosette. In the offered size M specimen, trunk formation, branching and the eventual leaf size may not yet be visible or may be only partly apparent. The commercial size does not indicate the plant’s current age or stage of development.

Characteristics

Origin: Yucca filifera is native to northeastern, central and southwestern Mexico. There it grows mainly in deserts and dry shrublands, including open plains and stony slopes. These natural habitats are characterised by abundant sunlight and periods of drought, although local soil conditions can vary.

Family: This species belongs to the asparagus family, Asparagaceae.

Position: Choose a warm, sunny and sheltered outdoor position. An airy position and very good drainage are particularly important during the wet Dutch winter. Container cultivation is practical while the plant remains manageable, as it can then be placed under cover during prolonged severe frost or exceptionally wet winter weather. Planting in the ground is best done in spring, allowing the plant to establish well before its first winter.

Height: A mature Yucca filifera can eventually reach approximately 8 to 12 metres in height and 2.5 to 4 metres in width. Old specimens can form a substantial trunk with several branches. These dimensions describe the mature species after many years, not the current size or growth within a specific period of the offered size M specimen.

Flowering period: Mature specimens can flower under suitable conditions. In the natural range, flowering can occur from late winter into spring, but no reliable, fixed flowering period has been established for cultivation in the Netherlands. Flowering of the offered size M specimen is not guaranteed.

Flower colour: The bell-shaped flowers are cream-white and, on mature plants, are borne in large, strongly branched inflorescences that characteristically hang downwards.

Hardiness: Established specimens can tolerate moderate to fairly severe frost in a dry, sheltered position, but hardiness is strongly influenced by drainage, the duration of frost and protection from winter wet. Protect a size M plant during severe or prolonged frost and prevent water from remaining around the roots or in the growing point. In a pot, the root ball cools more quickly; during heavy frost, temporarily place the pot in an unheated, bright and frost-free space.

Soil type: Use an open-textured, very well-drained soil or a mineral-rich container substrate. Mix high-quality potting compost or loose garden soil with coarse sand, fine gravel, lava granules or pumice. The species tolerates acidic, neutral and calcareous soil provided that excess water can drain away quickly. Avoid heavy, compacted soil and persistently wet roots.

Care

Light: Give the plant as much direct sunlight as possible. Gradually acclimatise a specimen coming from a greenhouse, indoor space or sheltered overwintering position to strong sunlight to prevent leaf damage. Insufficient light can result in less compact growth and weaker leaves.

Water: During active growth, water thoroughly as soon as the upper layer of the substrate has dried and allow excess water to drain away completely. A well-rooted Yucca filifera tolerates temporary drought, but do not allow a size M plant to dry out completely for an extended period. Give only a little water in winter and keep the substrate on the dry side during cold periods.

Fertiliser: In spring and early summer, apply a suitable balanced plant fertiliser in moderation according to the directions on the packaging. A high dose is unnecessary. Do not fertilise when growth has almost come to a standstill during the cold period.

Pruning: Regular pruning is unnecessary. Remove only fully dead or damaged leaves and, if present, a completely spent flower stalk. Cut carefully without damaging the trunk, healthy leaves or central growing point. Wear sturdy gloves and protect your eyes from the sharp leaf tips.

Repotting: Preferably repot in spring when the roots have largely filled the pot or when the plant is no longer sufficiently stable. Choose a sturdy, slightly larger pot with ample drainage holes and use a very well-drained substrate. Handle the roots carefully and do not plant the yucca deeper than before.

Humidity: Low to average humidity is suitable. The plant does not need high humidity and benefits particularly from an airy position. During sheltered overwintering, provide sufficient ventilation and avoid a space that remains warm, dark or humid for an extended period.

Special features: The white threads along the leaf margins explain the specific epithet filifera, which refers to thread-forming characteristics. The large, hanging inflorescences are a striking feature of mature specimens. The flowers are traditionally used as food in parts of Mexico, but the offered plant material has not been confirmed as suitable for consumption. Therefore, do not consume any part without reliable confirmation of its identity, growing history and appropriate preparation. Contact with the plant can cause skin irritation in sensitive people, and plant material can be harmful to pets if eaten. Wear gloves when handling the plant and, because of its sharp leaf tips, do not position it directly beside busy walkways or play areas.
