About the Rhapis puhuongensis - L
Rhapis puhuongensisRhapis puhuongensis, commonly known as the Pu Huong Lady Palm, is a rare dwarf palm belonging to the genus Rhapis. The species was only formally described in 2008 after being discovered in northern Vietnam. Because of its compact size, unusual leaf shape and ornamental inflorescences, it is considered one of the smallest and most decorative species within the genus.
In its natural habitat, Rhapis puhuongensis grows in shaded forests on steep limestone hills. The plant forms small clusters of slender stems and remains very compact, making it especially suitable for container cultivation or as a collector’s plant. Due to its restricted distribution and fragile habitat, this palm is regarded as rare in the wild.
Characteristics
- Growth habit: forms compact clumps with several thin stems emerging from the same root base.
- Height: a true dwarf palm that usually grows to only about 1 to 1.2 metres tall.
- Stems: slender bamboo-like canes covered with fibrous remnants of old leaf bases.
- Leaves: small fan-shaped leaves with a distinctive triangular blade outline.
- Leaf structure: the leaf blade remains undivided for the first few centimetres before splitting into about 13 to 15 narrow segments.
- Inflorescence: produces slightly pendulous inflorescences with soft pink to peach-coloured flowers.
- Fruits: small ovoid fruits that become yellowish to white when mature.
- Light: grows best in bright indirect light or partial shade since direct sunlight can scorch the delicate leaves.
- Water: requires regular watering so that the soil remains lightly moist without becoming waterlogged.
- Soil: thrives in airy well-draining soil rich in organic matter.
- Humidity: moderate to high humidity encourages healthy foliage development.
- Temperature: grows best in warm conditions but can tolerate brief periods of mild cold.
- Fertilization: light feeding during the growing season supports steady growth.
- Pruning: remove only old or damaged leaves to maintain a tidy plant.
