About the Musa sp. Nono Variegata (Dark) - L

Musa sp. Nono Variegata (Dark)

Musa sp. Nono Variegata (Dark) is a rare and striking ornamental banana plant known for its dramatic variegated foliage displaying shades of green, pink, burgundy, and deep purple. This unusual Musa form is highly valued among collectors of tropical plants due to its remarkable colour transformation and decorative appearance.
The leaves initially emerge with green and pale speckling but gradually develop vivid pink tones as they mature. Older leaves can eventually display deep burgundy or dark purple hues. Because of this strong colour evolution, every plant develops a unique appearance and is considered one of the most visually distinctive variegated bananas.

Characteristics
  1. Leaf colour: young leaves emerge with green and pale patterns that gradually develop into pink, burgundy, and sometimes dark purple tones.
  2. Growth habit: forms a tropical banana plant with a sturdy pseudostem composed of tightly wrapped leaf bases.
  3. Height: can reach approximately 2 metres in tropical outdoor conditions while container plants usually remain smaller.
  4. Leaves: produces large elongated leaves typical of Musa species that may naturally tear in windy conditions.
  5. Inflorescence: develops a hanging inflorescence with dark coloured bracts that reveal rows of small flowers.
  6. Fruits: may produce small pink bananas which are technically edible but often contain seeds and are mainly ornamental.
  7. Origin: native to Papua New Guinea where this form was originally found on Bougainville Island and later introduced into cultivation through Thailand.
Care
  1. Light: grows best in bright indirect light and should be protected from strong midday sun.
  2. Water: prefers evenly moist soil and requires regular watering without prolonged waterlogging.
  3. Soil: thrives in loose well-draining soil rich in organic material.
  4. Humidity: high humidity supports healthy growth and helps maintain the intense foliage colours.
  5. Temperature: prefers warm conditions between about 18 and 29 degrees Celsius and is very sensitive to cold.
  6. Fertilization: benefits from regular feeding with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer during the growing season.
  7. Maintenance: remove older leaves and regularly inspect the plant for pests such as spider mites or thrips.
