About the Livistona speciosa - Tray 60
Livistona speciosaLivistona speciosa, commonly known as the Taraw Palm or Mountain Serdang, is a majestic fan palm native to the tropical and montane forests of Southeast Asia. Its natural range stretches from southern China and Myanmar through Thailand to the Malay Peninsula. The palm is recognized for its tall slender trunk and large crown of fan-shaped leaves, giving it a stately architectural appearance.
In its natural habitat Livistona speciosa grows in moist forests with high rainfall. Because of its strong structure and relatively good cold tolerance, it is also valued as an ornamental tree in large tropical and subtropical landscapes.
Characteristics
1. Leaves: forms a large crown of 40 to 60 nearly circular fan leaves divided into many narrow segments.
2. Leaf structure: the leaves can reach about 1.5 to 2 meters in width and have rigid segments forming a dense crown.
3. Trunk: develops a slender upright trunk about 20 to 30 centimeters in diameter.
4. Petioles: the leaf stalks can reach about 1.4 to 1.9 meters and are armed with sharp recurved spines.
5. Inflorescence: produces long branched inflorescences emerging between the leaves.
6. Fruits: develops oval fruits that turn greenish-blue to dark blue when mature.
7. Size: can reach a height of about 20 to 25 meters in natural conditions.
Care
1. Position: grows best in full sun to light partial shade.
2. Light: young plants benefit from partial shade to prevent leaf burn.
3. Soil: prefers nutrient-rich, well-draining and slightly moist soil.
4. Water: requires regular watering and grows best in moist conditions.
5. Humidity: appreciates environments with relatively high humidity.
6. Temperature: can tolerate brief periods of light frost despite its tropical origin.
7. Wind: the strong leaves make the palm moderately wind tolerant.
