About the Livistona muelleri - Tray 60

Livistona muellerii

Livistona muelleri, commonly known as the Australian Dwarf Fan Palm or Cairns Fan Palm, is an elegant fan palm native to North Queensland in Australia, southern New Guinea, and parts of Indonesia. This palm is known for its compact growth and architectural appearance and is often compared to smaller species of the Copernicia genus. Its symmetrical crown and rigid leaves make it highly valued among collectors of tropical palms.
In its natural habitat Livistona muelleri grows in tropical forests and open woodland areas where the soil is well-drained and sunlight is abundant. Despite its tropical origin, this palm is known for its surprising adaptability to a range of climatic conditions.

Characteristics

1. Leaves: forms a dense crown of stiff circular fan leaves divided into numerous narrow segments.
2. Leaf structure: the leaf segments remain rigid and upright, giving the crown a very orderly appearance.
3. Trunk: develops a slender trunk about 15 to 25 centimeters in diameter.
4. Trunk texture: the upper trunk is often covered with persistent old leaf bases forming a decorative pattern.
5. Petioles: the leaf stalks are armed with small sharp recurved spines.
6. Inflorescence: produces branched inflorescences with reddish to dark red flowers.
7. Fruits: develops small oval fruits that turn blue to bluish-black when ripe.

Care

1. Position: grows well in full sun to light partial shade.
2. Light: adequate light promotes compact and healthy growth.
3. Soil: prefers well-draining sandy soil.
4. Water: young plants require regular watering while mature plants are more drought tolerant.
5. Humidity: adaptable to a wide range of humidity levels.
6. Temperature: surprisingly cold tolerant for a tropical palm and can withstand brief light frosts.
7. Wind: the stiff leaves make the palm relatively wind tolerant.
