About the Licuala peltata var. Sumawonghii - Tray 60
Licuala peltata var. SumawongiiLicuala peltata var. sumawongii, often called the Giant Fan Palm or Sumawong’s Palm, is a striking fan palm native to the tropical rainforests of the Malay Peninsula and southern Thailand. This palm is known for its enormous nearly perfectly circular leaves, which are among the largest in the Licuala genus. Because of its spectacular foliage and tropical appearance, it is considered one of the most desirable fan palms for tropical gardens and plant collections.
The palm grows slowly and usually develops a solitary trunk. In young plants the trunk may appear almost absent because the large leaves emerge directly from the base. As the plant matures, a slender trunk gradually forms.
Characteristics
1. Leaves: produces very large circular fan leaves that can reach about 1.5 to 2 meters in diameter.
2. Leaf structure: the leaves are mostly undivided with a deeply pleated texture and glossy dark green surface.
3. Growth habit: grows as a solitary palm with a slowly developing trunk.
4. Size: can eventually reach a height of about 3 to 5 meters.
5. Inflorescence: produces long arching inflorescences that can extend beyond the leaves.
6. Flowers: produces small pale flowers that later develop into fruits.
7. Fruits: develops small fruits that turn orange to red when mature.
Care
1. Position: grows best in partial shade or filtered light.
2. Light: direct midday sun may scorch or discolor the leaves.
3. Soil: prefers rich, humus-rich and well-draining soil.
4. Water: prefers consistently moist soil but does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.
5. Humidity: grows best in environments with high humidity.
6. Temperature: thrives in warm tropical climates but can tolerate brief temperatures near freezing if protected.
7. Wind: the large leaves are sensitive to strong winds and should be sheltered.
