About the Licuala orbicularis - S

Licuala orbicularis

Licuala orbicularis, often called the Parasol Palm or Umbrella Palm, is one of the most spectacular species within the Licuala genus. This palm is known for its large, nearly perfectly circular leaves that are exceptionally flat and symmetrical. Because of its distinctive foliage and rarity, it is highly prized by collectors of tropical plants.
In its natural habitat this palm grows in the shaded understory of tropical rainforests on the island of Borneo. The leaves form an elegant circular fan that gives the plant a striking ornamental appearance.

Characteristics

1. Leaves: produces large circular fan leaves that can reach up to about 1.2 meters in diameter.
2. Leaf structure: the leaves are almost undivided, flat and slightly pleated with a glossy green surface.
3. Growth habit: usually grows without a visible trunk, with leaves appearing to emerge from a short underground stem.
4. Petioles: the leaf stalks can reach up to about 1.5 meters in length and support the large leaves.
5. Size: remains relatively compact and usually reaches about 1 to 1.5 meters in height.
6. Flowers: produces small whitish flowers that appear in inflorescences among the leaves.
7. Fruits: develops small fruits that turn reddish-orange when mature.

Care

1. Position: grows best in partial shade to deep shade.
2. Light: direct sunlight should be avoided as it can damage the leaves.
3. Soil: prefers rich, humus-rich and well-draining soil.
4. Water: prefers consistently moist soil but should not sit in standing water.
5. Humidity: requires very high humidity, ideally above 70%.
6. Temperature: thrives in warm tropical temperatures above about 20°C.
7. Wind: the large leaves are sensitive to strong wind and should be protected.
