About the Licuala merguensis - L
Licuala merguensisLicuala merguensis is a distinctive fan palm native to the tropical rainforests of the Malay Peninsula and southern Thailand. This palm is notable for its circular fan leaves and is botanically recognized as the only Licuala species in Thailand known to produce striking yellow flowers. Because of its unique leaf structure and tropical appearance, it is highly valued among collectors of rare palms.
In its natural habitat the palm grows in the shaded understory of humid rainforests where humidity is high and sunlight is filtered through the forest canopy. Its compact growth and elegant fan leaves give the palm a strong tropical character.
Characteristics
1. Leaves: produces a crown of nearly circular fan leaves divided into about 9 to 17 broad segments.
2. Leaf structure: the central segment is wider than the others and is often attached by a small stalk, giving the leaf a distinctive appearance.
3. Petioles: the leaf stalks can reach up to about 2.2 meters in length and have small irregularly spaced spines at the base.
4. Trunk: usually develops a solitary trunk that remains relatively short and often covered by old leaf bases.
5. Inflorescence: produces branched inflorescences that emerge among the leaves and may sometimes be partly hidden by fallen leaf debris.
6. Flowers: the flowers are greenish-brown on the outside and bright yellow on the inside.
7. Fruits: produces small round fruits measuring about 0.8 to 1 centimeter in diameter.
Care
1. Position: grows best in partial shade to deep shade.
2. Light: direct sunlight should be avoided as it may scorch the leaves.
3. Soil: prefers rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter.
4. Water: prefers consistently moist soil but should not remain waterlogged.
5. Humidity: requires high humidity.
6. Temperature: grows best at temperatures between about 18°C and 27°C.
7. Wind: the leaves are sensitive to strong winds and should be protected.
