About the Licuala mattanensis Mapu - M
Licuala mattanesis MapuThe Licuala mapu is a very rare palm from the Indonesian island of Kalimantan. The palm has a beautiful appearance due to the various shades of green in its leaves. It is particularly striking due to its round, fan-shaped leaves, which are covered with a stunning mosaic pattern of green to dark brown/purple. This pattern gives the palm an almost abstract, artistic effect, making it especially attractive for both indoor and outdoor applications.
This palm grows slowly and remains relatively compact, with a maximum height of about 1.5 to 2 meters, making it ideal for smaller gardens, patios, or as a houseplant in well-lit spaces. Licuala mattanensis 'Mapu' thrives best in environments with well-draining soil and prefers a shady environment, as direct sunlight can damage its delicate leaves.
Features
- Leaves: The leaves of Licuala mattanensis Mapu are striking due to their unique pattern and color. This rare palm has round, fan-shaped leaves richly adorned with a mosaic of colors and spots. The leaf surface displays a lively pattern of dark green, almost black spots, and light green shades, giving the leaves a marbled appearance. The edges of the leaves are often slightly wavy, adding extra dynamics to the characteristic texture. Like other Licuala species, the leaves of Mapu grow on long, sturdy stems that hold the leaves upright, giving the space an exotic and artistic flair.
- Size: It remains relatively small, with a maximum height of about 1.5 to 2 meters. This makes it suitable for indoor environments and smaller gardens, where it doesn’t take up much space.
- Growth Habit: It is a compact, slow-growing species. The palm often forms a low, dense shrub before it grows significantly in height.
- Shade-Loving: Prefers shaded spots or filtered light. Direct sunlight can damage the leaves, especially the delicate and varied patterns.
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can burn the leaves, while insufficient light can cause sparse growth. A spot with filtered light, such as near an east or north-facing window, is ideal.
- Temperature: Thrives best in warm, tropical temperatures between 18°C and 26°C. Ensure the plant is not exposed to temperatures below 15°C and protect it from drafts and sudden temperature changes.
- Watering: Keep the potting soil consistently lightly moist, but avoid the plant standing in water. The plant doesn’t like to dry out, but too much water can lead to root rot. Let the top layer of soil dry lightly between waterings.
- Humidity: As a tropical plant, Licuala mattanensis Mapu requires high humidity, ideally around 60% or higher. A humidifier can help, or you can regularly mist the plant with water.
- Potting Mix: Use airy, well-draining palm soil with a mix of peat and perlite or orchid mix. This mix ensures excess water drains well and prevents water buildup at the roots.
- Fertilizing: Feed with slow-release fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter when the plant is resting.
- Repotting: Licuala mattanensis Mapu grows slowly, so repotting is not often necessary. You can do this every few years, depending on the size of the plant and the condition of the potting soil. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one.
