About the Licuala maculata - M
Licuala maculata is a solitary tropical fan palm from Sarawak, Borneo. The species is distinguished by its nearly circular leaves, which are divided into wedge-shaped segments and naturally patterned with paler green mottling. In size M, this palm is offered for growing on in a container in a warm, humid and sheltered position. Commercial size M does not in itself indicate age or flowering maturity.
Characteristics
Origin: The species is endemic to the area around Batang Ai in Sarawak, Borneo, where it grows in humid tropical forest.
Family: Arecaceae, the palm family.
Position: A warm, humid and sheltered position in a heated greenhouse, bright conservatory or very bright indoor space where a stable climate can be maintained. During warm, frost-free periods, the palm can also be placed outdoors in a sheltered position in partial shade.
Height: The species is stemless or forms a short stem and develops leaf blades approximately 80 cm wide. A definitive mature height has not been reliably documented; in a container, its eventual dimensions depend on the growing conditions.
Flowering period: Sufficiently developed specimens can produce an upright, branched inflorescence in the crown. A fixed seasonal flowering period has not been reliably documented, and size M does not guarantee flowering.
Flower colour: The colour of fresh flowers has not been reliably documented. The small flowers are usually borne singly and sometimes in pairs on the inflorescence.
Hardiness: Not frost hardy. Protect the palm from frost, cold draughts and prolonged chilling, and keep it warm and frost-free over winter.
Soil type: An airy, humus-rich and well-drained substrate that retains moisture evenly without remaining wet for prolonged periods.
Care
Light: Provide bright, filtered light or place the palm in partial shade. Protect the foliage from intense midday sun and acclimatise the palm gradually to more direct sunlight.
Water: Keep the substrate consistently slightly moist during active growth and do not allow the root ball to dry out completely. Let excess water drain away fully and water slightly less when growth slows, without allowing the root ball to dry out.
Fertiliser: During active growth, apply a complete fertiliser suitable for palms in moderation and follow the instructions on the packaging. Reduce feeding when growth slows.
Pruning: Remove only fully dried or damaged leaves. Do not cut into the central growing point.
Repotting: Repot once the roots have largely filled the available pot space. Choose a pot only slightly larger, with drainage holes, and disturb the root ball as little as possible.
Humidity: As a practical care measure, provide high humidity. Avoid dry heated air and strong draughts, and ensure gentle air movement around the foliage.
Special features: The lower part of the petioles may carry small marginal spines; handle the palm with care.
