About the Licuala lauterbachii var.lauterbachii - S

Licuala lauterbachii var lauterbachii

Licuala lauterbachii var. lauterbachii is an elegant fan palm native to the tropical lowland rainforests of Papua New Guinea. This medium-sized palm is known for its large circular fan leaves that are deeply divided into many narrow segments. Because of its graceful foliage and tropical appearance, this species is highly appreciated by collectors of rare palms.
The palm typically develops a single slender trunk and forms a decorative crown of broad fan-shaped leaves. In its natural habitat it grows in the shaded understory of rainforests where humidity is high and direct sunlight is limited.

Characteristics

1. Trunk: develops a slender solitary trunk that can reach approximately 4 to 6 meters in height.
2. Leaves: produces large circular fan leaves that can reach about 1 meter in diameter.
3. Leaf structure: the leaves are deeply divided into about 30 narrow segments of irregular width.
4. Petioles: the leaf stalks are thin and covered with brown hairs and small curved spines.
5. Inflorescence: produces long branched inflorescences bearing small creamy-white flowers.
6. Fruits: develops small round fruits that turn bright red when mature.
7. Origin and habitat: native to the lowland rainforests of Papua New Guinea, particularly in the coastal lowlands of Morobe Province.

1. Position: grows best in partial shade to shade.
2. Light: direct sunlight should be avoided as it may damage the leaves.
3. Soil: prefers rich, slightly acidic, well-draining soil.
4. Water: prefers consistently moist soil but should not sit in standing water.
5. Humidity: requires high humidity, preferably above 60%.
6. Temperature: thrives in warm tropical climates.
7. Wind: the leaves are sensitive to strong wind and should be protected.
