About the Licuala grandis - L
Licuala grandisLicuala grandis, commonly known as the Ruffled Fan Palm or Vanuatu Fan Palm, is widely considered one of the most beautiful and architecturally striking small palms in the world. The palm is especially admired for its perfectly round fan-shaped leaves that remain undivided, giving the plant a unique and ornamental appearance.
This palm grows slowly and remains relatively compact, making it ideal for smaller tropical gardens, conservatories, or as an elegant indoor plant. Because of its distinctive foliage structure, it is often used as a focal plant in shaded gardens and tropical landscapes.
Characteristics
1. Trunk: develops a single slender trunk that is usually only about 5 to 10 centimeters in diameter and covered with brown fibrous remnants of old leaf bases.
2. Leaves: produces large, nearly perfectly circular fan leaves that remain undivided.
3. Leaf margin: the edges of the leaves are pleated and slightly notched, giving them a decorative ruffled appearance.
4. Growth habit: grows slowly and typically reaches a height of about 2 to 3 meters.
5. Inflorescence: produces long arching flower stalks that emerge between the leaves.
6. Fruits: after flowering, clusters of small green berries develop that ripen to a bright reddish color.
7. Origin and habitat: native to the tropical rainforests of Vanuatu and the Santa Cruz Islands in the South Pacific where it grows in the shaded understory of the forest.
Care
1. Position: grows best in partial shade or filtered light.
2. Light: direct sunlight may scorch or yellow the leaves.
3. Soil: requires rich, well-draining soil.
4. Water: prefers regular watering but the roots should not sit in waterlogged soil.
5. Humidity: high humidity is important to prevent brown leaf tips.
6. Temperature: sensitive to cold and best suited to warm tropical climates.
7. Wind: the large undivided leaves can easily be damaged by wind and should be protected.
