About the Licuala aurantiaca - Tray 60

Licuala aurantiaca

Licuala aurantiaca, commonly known as the Golden Licuala or Orange Petiole Fan Palm, is a striking fan palm valued for its colorful leaf stalks. Although it was once described as a separate species, it is now widely regarded as a synonym of Licuala paludosa. Because of its elegant form and vibrant coloration, this palm is popular in tropical gardens and botanical collections.
The palm forms several stems from the same base and develops large circular fan leaves. Its distinctive orange to golden-red petioles make Licuala aurantiaca particularly ornamental, especially when the plant receives bright but filtered light.

Characteristics

1. Trunk: grows in clusters with multiple slender stems emerging from the same base. The palm typically reaches heights of about 2 to 4 meters.
2. Leaves: large circular fan-shaped leaves that are dark green and deeply divided into several segments.
3. Petioles: the leaf stalks and leaf sheaths display a striking orange to golden-red color, which becomes more intense when grown in bright filtered light.
4. Growth habit: forms a multi-stemmed palm that develops into a compact ornamental clump.
5. Inflorescence: produces long, hanging inflorescences that appear among the leaves.
6. Fruits: after flowering, small round fruits develop and ripen to a reddish-orange color.
7. Origin and habitat: native mainly to Thailand and also found in parts of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaysia. In the wild it grows in coastal swamp forests and peat swamps where the soil is often seasonally flooded.

Care

1. Light: grows best in partial shade or dappled light. Strong direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.
2. Soil: prefers rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter.
3. Water: requires regular watering and the soil should remain consistently moist.
4. Humidity: benefits from high humidity to maintain healthy foliage.
5. Temperature: a tropical palm that thrives in warm climates and should be protected from cold temperatures.
6. Growth: relatively slow to moderate growing and gradually forms dense clumps.
7. Use: due to its bright color and compact size, it is often grown as a container plant for conservatories, tropical gardens, or bright interiors.
