About the Jubaea chilensis - Tray 45

Jubaea chilensis

Jubaea chilensis, commonly known as the Chilean Wine Palm, is an impressive palm from the Arecaceae family native to central Chile. It grows naturally in regions with dry summers and mild winters, where it slowly develops into one of the most magnificent palms in the world. Its robust nature and exceptional cold tolerance make it highly valued among palm enthusiasts.
The palm is renowned for its massive trunk, which is among the thickest of any palm species. Combined with its large pinnate fronds and symmetrical crown, it creates a truly majestic appearance. Although growth is slow, its remarkable size and longevity more than compensate for the wait.

Characteristics
  1. Leaves: large pinnate fronds with a gray-green to dark green color and elegant arching form.
  2. Growth: solitary palm with upright growth and a highly symmetrical crown.
  3. Size: large, capable of eventually exceeding 20 meters in height.
  4. Trunk: exceptionally thick and massive trunk, much broader than that of most palm species.
  5. Feature: very slow-growing palm with remarkable longevity and excellent cold tolerance.
  6. Habitat: dry hillsides and valleys in the Mediterranean climate of central Chile.
  7. Ornament: highly ornamental due to its monumental trunk and elegant crown.
Care
  1. Light: full sun for optimal growth and development.
  2. Water: moderate watering; relatively drought tolerant once established.
  3. Soil: well-draining soil, preferably rich in minerals and organic matter.
  4. Temperature: tolerates both heat and light to moderate frost when mature.
  5. Humidity: average humidity is sufficient.
  6. Fertilization: fertilize regularly but moderately during the growing season.
  7. Maintenance: requires little maintenance; old fronds may be removed if desired.
