About the Cyathea Orange Giant - L

Cyathea ‘Orange Giant’ is a fast-growing tree fern with a vigorous, upright habit and a broad crown of large, glossy dark green fronds. The name ‘Orange Giant’ refers to the copper-orange to orange-brown scales on the young coiled fronds, stipes and around the growing point. This warm colour contrast makes the emerging growth particularly striking.

In size L, this tree fern makes a distinctive container plant for a bright conservatory or heated greenhouse. During warm, frost-free months, it can also be placed outdoors in a sheltered position. Allow sufficient space for the spreading fronds and provide a humid, airy growing environment.

Characteristics

Origin: This trade form is associated in the specialist fern trade with the montane regions of Papua New Guinea. Because ‘Orange Giant’ is not a formally published species name and the name is not used consistently everywhere, its precise botanical provenance depends on the original propagation line.

Family: Cyathea ‘Orange Giant’ belongs to the Cyatheaceae, the tree fern family. The exact species within the genus Cyathea has not been confirmed; Cyathea sp. ‘Orange Giant’ is therefore the most careful botanical designation.

Position: Place the plant in a warm, sheltered position in partial shade. A bright conservatory or heated greenhouse is suitable; during warm, frost-free periods, the plant can also be placed outdoors. Protect the fronds from harsh midday sun, cold draughts and dry wind.

Height: This trade form is known for its vigorous growth and can develop a substantial trunk with a broad crown. No reliable maximum mature height has been established for this unnamed selection. In a container and in the climate of the Netherlands and Belgium, the plant usually remains more compact than under consistently warm and humid conditions.

Flowering period: Not applicable. Tree ferns do not produce flowers, but can reproduce by spores that develop on the undersides of sufficiently mature fronds.

Flower colour: Not applicable because this tree fern does not produce flowers. Its ornamental value comes from the dark green fronds and the copper-orange to orange-brown scales around the emerging growth.

Hardiness: Cyathea ‘Orange Giant’ is not reliably hardy in the Netherlands or Belgium. Keep the plant completely frost-free and overwinter it in a bright, sheltered position where prolonged cold and cold draughts are avoided.

Soil type: Use a humus-rich, airy and well-drained potting mix that retains sufficient moisture. A mixture containing organic matter and an airy drainage component helps prevent both drying out and prolonged exposure to wet, oxygen-poor soil.

Care

Light: Provide plenty of bright, filtered light or light partial shade. Avoid prolonged harsh midday sun, which can scorch the fronds. Gradually acclimatise a plant that has been kept indoors before placing it outside.

Water: Keep the root ball consistently and evenly moist, but do not allow water to remain in the bottom of the container. Never let the soil dry out completely. During warm periods, the trunk may also be moistened regularly; during cool overwintering, avoid allowing water to remain in the growing point.

Fertiliser: During the active growing season, regularly apply a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser according to the instructions on the packaging. Feed only when the potting mix is moist and reduce fertilising when growth slows in winter.

Pruning: Formative pruning is not required. Remove only fully dried, damaged or dead fronds close to the trunk. Leave the central growing point undisturbed, as new fronds emerge from this point.

Repotting: Check the plant each spring and repot it when the roots fill the container or the plant is no longer sufficiently stable. Choose a slightly larger, sturdy container with good drainage and do not position the trunk deeper than it was previously.

Humidity: High humidity supports healthy frond development. Protect the plant from dry heated air and hot, drying wind. Brown frond edges may develop when the air is too dry or the root ball does not remain sufficiently moist.

Special features: The most striking feature is the copper-orange to orange-brown scaling on the young coiled fronds, stipes and the area around the growing point. As the fronds unfurl, they form a broad, dark green crown. The trade name ‘Orange Giant’ should not be confused with a formally established botanical species name.
