About the Cyathea new caledonian - S
Cyathea New Caledonian is an exotic tree fern from New Caledonia with large, bright green fronds and a graceful tropical appearance. As the plant develops, the fronds form a broad crown above an upright trunk. In size S, the plant is offered for container cultivation in a warm, sheltered position with high humidity. It can be grown indoors when sufficient light, warmth and humidity are available.
Characteristics
Origin: This tree fern originates from the moist forests of New Caledonia, where ferns grow in warm conditions with filtered light and high humidity.
Family: Cyatheaceae, the tree fern family.
Position: A warm, sheltered position in partial shade or bright, indirect light. The plant is suitable for a warm greenhouse or bright indoor space and can be placed outdoors during warm periods, provided it is protected from harsh sunlight, drying winds and cold.
Height: Under favourable conditions, the plant can develop into a sizeable tree fern with an upright trunk and a broad crown of fronds. Its eventual height depends strongly on the climate, care and available root space; growth remains more restricted in a container.
Flowering period: Tree ferns do not flower. They reproduce by spores once the fronds are sufficiently developed.
Flower colour: Not applicable, because this fern does not produce flowers.
Hardiness: Not reliably winter hardy in the Netherlands. Keep the plant frost-free and protect it from prolonged cold; a warm, sheltered overwintering position is the safest choice for size S.
Soil type: A humus-rich, airy and well-drained substrate that retains sufficient moisture while allowing excess water to drain away easily.
Care
Light: Provide bright, indirect light or partial shade. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can damage the fronds, and acclimatise the plant gradually to a brighter outdoor position.
Water: Keep the substrate evenly moist and do not allow the root ball to dry out completely. Let excess water drain freely so the roots do not remain in standing water.
Fertiliser: During active growth, regularly apply a limited amount of suitable fern fertiliser or mild foliage-plant fertiliser. Reduce feeding when growth slows.
Pruning: Remove only completely dried or damaged fronds. Do not cut into the growing point at the centre of the crown.
Repotting: Repot when the roots have largely filled the available container space. Choose a container only slightly larger and ensure it has drainage holes so excess water can escape.
Humidity: High humidity supports healthy frond development. Avoid persistently dry air while maintaining gentle air circulation around the plant.
Special features: Newly unfurling fronds are delicate. Protect the central growing point from damage and move the plant carefully to prevent the large fronds from breaking.
