About the Copernicia x textiles 'Blue' - Tray 60

Copernicia × textilis 'Blue' is a Cuban fan palm and a natural hybrid of Copernicia baileyana and Copernicia hospita. As the palm develops, its fan-shaped leaves form a distinctive crown with a bold, architectural appearance.

This palm is supplied in Tray 60 as a young seedling for further cultivation. Initially provide a warm, very bright and stable growing environment. With suitable care, it can gradually develop into a striking container plant.

Characteristics

Origin: This natural hybrid occurs in Cuba, with confirmed records in the provinces of Camagüey, Ciego de Ávila, Holguín and Sancti Spíritus.

Family: Arecaceae, the palm family.

Position: A warm, very bright and sheltered position in a heated greenhouse, a frost-free conservatory or another suitable indoor space. During warm, frost-free periods, the young palm can be placed outdoors in a sheltered position after gradual acclimatisation.

Height: Mature specimens develop a distinct trunk that is often spindle-shaped or swollen. No reliable fixed ultimate height has been established for this natural hybrid; growth also remains considerably more limited in a container than in tropical open ground. The product offered in Tray 60 is still at the seedling stage.

Flowering period: No reliable fixed flowering period has been established for this natural hybrid. Therefore, no specific flowering period is stated.

Flower colour: No specific flower colour has been reliably confirmed as a consistent characteristic of this natural hybrid. Therefore, no colour is stated as a fixed characteristic.

Hardiness: Not winter hardy. Keep the young palm warm, bright and frost-free, and avoid prolonged exposure to cold, particularly when the substrate is moist.

Soil type: An airy, well-drained substrate for palm seedlings that retains some moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely.

Care

Light: Provide the young palm with plenty of bright light. Acclimatise it gradually to direct sun and avoid a sudden transition to intense midday sun to reduce the risk of leaf damage.

Water: Keep the substrate lightly and evenly moist during active growth, but never wet for prolonged periods. Check the small root ball regularly, allow excess water to drain completely and prevent both complete drying and standing water. Reduce watering when growth slows.

Fertiliser: Feed sparingly during active growth and only after the young palm has established well following potting. Use a suitable palm fertiliser containing trace elements according to the dosage on the packaging, and reduce or stop feeding when growth slows.

Pruning: Remove only fully dead or severely damaged leaves. Retain healthy green foliage wherever possible.

Repotting: Repot once the roots hold the substrate in the tray cell together and have largely filled the available space. Choose a small, stable pot with drainage holes that is only slightly larger, plant at the same depth and disturb the roots as little as possible.

Humidity: Average humidity is suitable as a practical care guideline. Provide adequate air movement and, in cool conditions, do not allow water to remain around the growing point for prolonged periods.

Special features: The central growing point is essential to the young palm's continued development. Protect it carefully from damage when moving, pruning and repotting the plant.
