About the Copernicia x textiles 'Blue' - S
Copernicia × textilis 'Blue' is a Cuban fan palm and a natural hybrid of Copernicia baileyana and Copernicia hospita. Its fan-shaped leaves form a distinctive crown and give the palm a bold, architectural appearance.
In size S, this palm is offered for continued cultivation in a pot. With suitable care and sufficient space, it can gradually develop into a striking container plant.
Characteristics
Origin: This natural hybrid occurs in Cuba, where it grows in semi-deciduous forests and savannas shaped by human activity.
Family: Arecaceae, the palm family.
Position: A warm, very bright and sheltered position in a heated greenhouse, a frost-free conservatory or another suitable indoor space. During warm, frost-free periods, the palm can be placed outdoors as a container plant.
Height: Mature specimens develop a distinct trunk. Ultimate height depends on climate, position and cultivation method; in a pot, the palm remains considerably smaller than in tropical open ground.
Flowering period: Mature specimens may flower under persistently warm conditions. No fixed flowering period can be given for container cultivation.
Flower colour: No specific flower colour has been reliably confirmed as a consistent characteristic of this natural hybrid. Therefore, no colour is stated as a fixed characteristic.
Hardiness: Not winter hardy. Overwinter the palm in bright, frost-free conditions and avoid prolonged exposure to cold, particularly when the substrate is moist.
Soil type: An airy, well-drained palm substrate that retains some moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely.
Care
Light: Provide as much bright light and direct sun as possible. Gradually acclimatise a plant that is not used to strong light to full sun to reduce the risk of leaf damage.
Water: Water moderately during active growth and adjust watering to the rate of evaporation. Allow excess water to drain completely, avoid keeping the substrate wet for long periods and do not let the root ball dry out completely. Reduce watering when growth slows.
Fertiliser: During active growth, use a suitable palm fertiliser containing trace elements according to the dosage on the packaging. Reduce or stop feeding when growth slows.
Pruning: Remove only fully dead or severely damaged leaves. Retain healthy green foliage wherever possible.
Repotting: Repot when the roots have largely filled the available pot space or when drainage deteriorates. Choose a stable pot with drainage holes that is only slightly larger and disturb the roots as little as possible.
Humidity: Average humidity is suitable as a practical care guideline. Provide adequate air movement and, in cool conditions, do not allow water to remain in the crown for prolonged periods.
Special features: The central growing point is essential to the palm's continued development. Protect it carefully from damage when moving, pruning and repotting the plant.
