About the Chambeyronia macrocarpa - M

Chambeyronia macrocarpa

Better known as the flame thrower palm, Chambeyronia macrocarpa is a beautiful and rare palm native to New Caledonia. This lush island is located east of Australia and north of New Zealand. On this island, you’ll find extraordinary primitive plants, including the flame thrower palm, which dates back to the Mesozoic era when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Its young red leaves gradually change into deep glossy green curved leaves over time, creating a beautiful contrast within the crown.
The trunk of Chambeyronia macrocarpa is straight, smooth, and light gray to whitish in color, often with distinctive leaf scars. This palm can grow to a height of 8 to 12 meters, making it an impressive sight in tropical gardens. The leaves are large and grow into a well-spread crown, with each leaf reaching up to 3 meters long.
Chambeyronia macrocarpa thrives in tropical or subtropical climates, where temperatures rarely drop below 10°C. It flourishes in well-draining soil and can be planted in both full sun and partial shade. The palm is also known for its striking large bright orange fruits, which further add to its ornamental value.

Features:
  1. Unique leaf color: The most distinctive feature of Chambeyronia macrocarpa is the color of the young leaves. When unfurling, the new leaves are bright red, which is what has earned the palm its nickname as the flame thrower. These red leaves gradually change to deep glossy green.
  2. Leaves: The leaves are large and feathery, reaching up to 3 meters long. They form a well-spread, symmetrical crown, giving the palm a tropical look. The leaves are dark green when mature and slightly curved, enhancing the palm’s graceful appearance.
  3. Trunk: Mature plants have a straight, slender trunk with a light green to grayish color. The trunk features visible ring-shaped leaf scars, giving it a distinctive appearance. The palm reaches a height of 8 to 12 meters.
  4. Fruits: The palm produces striking bright orange fruits, which add an extra decorative element to the palm, especially when clustered together on the tree.
  5. Growth habit: It grows slowly, making it suitable for gardens where long-term development is desired.
  6. Climate: Thrives in tropical and subtropical climates where the temperature rarely drops below 10°C.
Care:
  1. Light: It thrives well in both full sun and partial shade. In warmer climates, a location with light shade gives the best results, especially for younger palms. In subtropical areas, it can grow in full sun.
  2. Watering: Prefers moist soil, but it should not become waterlogged. Regular watering is important, especially during hot or dry periods. Watering can be reduced in the winter.
  3. Soil: Grows best in well-draining, fertile soil with a high organic content. A slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal. Adding compost or organic material helps keep the soil nutrient-rich and improves drainage.
  4. Temperature: Thrives in warm tropical or subtropical climates. The ideal temperature range is between 18°C and 30°C, and the palm does not tolerate temperatures below 10°C. Protection from cold and frost is necessary in cooler regions.
  5. Humidity: Prefers high humidity. In drier climates, regularly spraying the leaves can help simulate a tropical environment.
  6. Fertilization: During the growing season, you can fertilize the palm with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer for palms. This promotes healthy leaves and a strong root system. Fertilization is typically not needed in the winter.
  7. Pruning: Requires minimal pruning. Only remove dead or damaged leaves to keep the palm looking neat.
