About the Carpentaria acuminata - Tray 60
Carpentaria acuminataCarpentaria acuminata, commonly known as the Carpentaria Palm, is a slender and exceptionally fast-growing tropical palm native to northern Australia. This elegant species is the only member of the genus Carpentaria and is valued for its graceful appearance and self-cleaning growth habit.
In its natural habitat it can reach impressive heights. The smooth trunk and long, arching fronds create a classic tropical look. Because of its rapid growth and elegant form, Carpentaria acuminata is often planted as a striking specimen palm in tropical landscapes.
Characteristics
1. Origin: tropical rainforests of the Northern Territory in Australia.
2. Size: typically grows 10–15 meters tall in cultivation and can exceed 30 meters in the wild.
3. Growth habit: solitary palm with a slender upright trunk.
4. Trunk: smooth grey to tan trunk with widely spaced ring scars.
5. Leaves: long pinnate fronds reaching up to about 4 meters in length.
6. Crown: long green crownshaft carrying around 10–12 gracefully arching fronds.
7. Fruit: large clusters of bright red fruits; the juice contains calcium oxalate crystals that may irritate skin.
Care
1. Light: grows best in full sun to bright indirect light.
2. Watering: requires heavy irrigation and consistently moist soil.
3. Soil: rich, fertile, well-draining soil with organic matter.
4. Temperature: strictly tropical; protect from temperatures near freezing.
5. Drought tolerance: low tolerance for drought and saline soils.
6. Maintenance: self-cleaning; old fronds drop naturally, reducing pruning needs.
7. Placement: ideal as a specimen palm or in grouped plantings for rapid height in tropical gardens.
