About the Calyptrocalyx poyphyllus - L
Calyptrocalyx polyphyllusCalyptrocalyx polyphyllus, commonly known as the Flame Palm or Giagiau, is a striking tropical palm native to the rainforests of Papua New Guinea. It naturally grows in the sheltered understory and is best known for its spectacular red new leaves.
When a new leaf emerges, it appears in intense maroon to bright red tones. Within one to two weeks, the leaf gradually matures to deep green. The finely drawn-out leaflet tips enhance the flame-like appearance, making this palm highly desirable among collectors of rare species.
Characteristics
1. Origin: rainforests of Papua New Guinea.
2. Size: reaches approximately 2 to 4 meters in height.
3. Growth habit: clustering palm typically forming 2 to 5 slender stems.
4. Leaves: elliptical leaflets with long, narrow drip tips creating a flame-like effect.
5. New growth: young leaves emerge bright red to deep maroon before turning green.
6. Flowering: monoecious; male flowers bloom before female flowers mature to prevent self-pollination.
7. Fruit: small, oval fruits that ripen to bright scarlet red.
8. Cultural use: hard stems are occasionally used locally for crafting spears.
Care
1. Light: grows best in partial to deep shade; protect young plants from direct sunlight.
2. Watering: keep soil consistently moist but well-drained.
3. Humidity: requires high humidity and is sensitive to dry winds.
4. Soil: humus-rich, well-draining tropical soil mix.
5. Temperature: strictly tropical; protect below 10°C and keep completely frost-free.
6. Indoor growing: suitable as a potted plant but may cluster less in confined containers.
7. Winter care: overwinter indoors or in a heated greenhouse in cooler climates.
