About the Calyptrocalyx pachystachys - S
Calyptrocalyx pachystachysWhat makes Calyptrocalyx pachystachys unique is its beautiful inflorescence, which is usually hidden deep within the crown. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, ultimately giving way to orange berries that add a practical pop of color to the plant. Although this palm thrives mostly in its natural habitat, it is becoming increasingly popular among tropical plant enthusiasts worldwide, as long as it is kept in warm conditions.
This species grows well in shaded or semi-shaded areas and requires constant moisture. Due to its unique aesthetics and adaptability, Calyptrocalyx pachystachys is a popular addition to botanical gardens and tropical collections, both indoors and outdoors. However, due to its specific climate and care requirements, it remains a challenge for growers.
Features
- Origin: A dwarf palm from the rainforest of New Guinea.
- Leaves: Glossy green leaves with beautiful elliptical leaflets that have a finely pointed tip. New leaves emerge red to chestnut brown. The palm has a small crown.
- Size: Can grow up to about 1.8 meters tall.
- Hardiness: Thrives best in warm, tropical conditions (minimum 20°C). Protect from temperatures below 10°C.
- Growth: Moderate growth, shrub-like appearance.
- Trunk: Cane-like trunk, slender and can be single or multiple.
- Height: Generally stays quite small for a palm, with a maximum height of about 2-4 meters. This makes it suitable for smaller gardens or as a houseplant in large spaces.
- Diameter: The trunk is usually small and remains compact, making it an attractive choice for garden lovers with limited space.
- Light: Grows best in shaded or semi-shaded conditions. Direct sunlight can damage the leaves, so make sure it is placed in a location where it is partially sheltered, especially during the hottest hours of the day.
- Water Requirements: Water regularly without allowing the roots to sit in water, as this is essential for healthy growth.
- Soil: Use a well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic material combined with palm soil.
- Temperature: This palm does best at a constant temperature between 18-27°C. Avoid low temperatures. A minimum temperature of 15°C is recommended to prevent damage to the plant. Exposure to temperatures below 10°C can cause leaf damage and eventually kill the plant.
- Cold Sensitivity: Calyptrocalyx pachystachys is very sensitive to cold drafts and cold in general. It is important to protect this palm from drafts and rapid temperature fluctuations.
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity. Regular misting or a humidifier can help increase humidity, especially indoors.
- Fertilization: Fertilize the plant during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth.
