About the Brahea edulis - S

Brahea edulis, also known as the Guadalupe palm, is a slow-growing evergreen fan palm with a sturdy, single-stemmed habit and broad, pleated green leaves. In size S, this palm is particularly suitable for container cultivation on a sunny patio or in a very bright, frost-free conservatory or greenhouse. It can be planted in the ground in a warm, sheltered and exceptionally well-drained position, but size S alone does not indicate the plant's age or its actual level of frost hardiness.

Characteristics

Origin: Brahea edulis is naturally restricted to the Mexican island of Guadalupe. There it grows in a dry, rocky landscape influenced by maritime fog.

Family: This palm belongs to the palm family, Arecaceae.

Position: Choose a sunny, warm and sheltered position. A container allows you to regulate light, water and winter protection most precisely. Planting in the ground is only advisable in a very favourable position with excellent drainage; a mild microclimate is important for permanent outdoor cultivation.

Height: In the ground, a mature specimen can reach approximately 8 to 12 metres in height and about 2.5 to 4 metres in width. In a container, the plant generally remains more compact and grows slowly.

Flowering period: Mature specimens may flower during the warmer part of the year. The precise period depends on the climate and growing conditions; size S does not automatically mean that the plant is mature enough to flower.

Flower colour: The flowers are generally cream to pale yellow and are carried in large, branched inflorescences among the leaves.

Hardiness: A well-established mature plant tolerates brief periods of moderate frost, but young plants, prolonged cold, winter wet and a frozen root ball increase the risk of damage. A container-grown plant should therefore preferably be overwintered in a bright, frost-free place.

Soil type: Use an open, very free-draining growing medium, such as potting compost mixed with coarse sand, fine gravel or lava grit. Avoid compacted soil and standing water around the roots.

Care

Light: Provide as much direct sunlight as possible. Gradually acclimatise a plant coming from a greenhouse or dark winter storage to strong sunlight to reduce the risk of leaf scorch.

Water: Water moderately during active growth and allow the surface layer to dry slightly between waterings. Do not allow the root ball to dry out completely for prolonged periods, but always let excess water drain away. Water much less in winter.

Fertiliser: Apply a modest dose of palm fertiliser regularly during the growing season, following the instructions on the packaging. Reduce or stop feeding when growth has almost ceased in winter.

Pruning: Remove only completely dried or clearly damaged leaves and avoid damaging the central growing point. The leaf stalks may carry small teeth, so wear gloves and use sturdy tools.

Repotting: Repot preferably in spring when the roots have filled the container. Choose a stable pot only slightly larger than the previous one, with ample drainage holes, and keep the base of the stem at the same level.

Humidity: Normal humidity is suitable. Indoors or in a greenhouse, provide good ventilation and avoid continuously warm, stagnant and very humid conditions.

Special features: The species is notable for its broad green fan leaves and develops a sturdy trunk when mature. Following pollination, mature plants may produce edible fruits, but flowering and fruiting are not guaranteed on the specimen offered.
