About the Beccariophoenix alfredii - M

Beccariophoenix Alfredii

The Beccariophoenix alfredii, or mountain coconut palm, is an impressive palm tree native to Madagascar. Often compared to the iconic coconut palm for its appearance, it is far more tolerant of cooler temperatures. This palm can reach a height of 10 to 15 meters, featuring a smooth trunk and a lush crown of large, feather-shaped leaves that can grow up to 3 meters long.
The mountain coconut palm is popular in gardens for its robust growth and tropical appearance. It thrives in both warm and temperate climates and can tolerate light frost, making it a versatile choice for a variety of environments.

Features
  1. Habitat: Native to the inland regions of Madagascar, where it grows on hilly and rocky terrain, as well as in the moist valleys west of Antsirabe and the high plateau at an altitude of about 1000 meters. Temperatures in this habitat are relatively cool year-round, with winter nights occasionally dropping below freezing.
  2. Size: Under ideal conditions, it can grow to a height of 10 to 15 meters, with a slender, smooth trunk and a broad crown of graceful leaves.
  3. Leaves: Feather-shaped leaves that can grow up to 3 meters long. These leaves are dark green and give the palm a lush, tropical look.
  4. Resilience: Unlike many other tropical palms, Beccariophoenix alfredii is well-adapted to cold temperatures and can withstand light frost down to -3°C.
Care
  1. Light: Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially during its younger stages of growth.
  2. Watering: Thrives in well-draining soil. Keep the soil lightly moist but avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.
  3. Soil: Performs best in fertile, well-draining soil but can also grow in less rich soils as long as adequate drainage is provided.
  4. Temperature: Remarkably tolerant of cooler temperatures and can survive light frost down to approximately -3°C, which is unusual for tropical species.
  5. Fertilization: Fertilize during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced fertilizer designed for palms.
