About the Areca catechu - XL
Areca catechuThe Areca catechu, better known as the betel palm, is an elegant tropical palm native to Southeast Asia and the regions surrounding the Indian Ocean. This palm is valued for its slender growth, graceful trunk and long, arching leaves, making it a striking feature in gardens, on terraces and in spacious indoor areas.
Unlike the dwarf variety, the Areca catechu can grow into a medium to large palm. It grows at a moderate pace and can be planted both in the ground and in large containers. With proper care, this palm is relatively low-maintenance and long-lasting. The Areca catechu thrives in warm conditions, with sufficient light and well-draining soil to remain healthy.
Characteristics
1. Origin: native to Southeast Asia and the tropical regions around the Indian Ocean.
2. Size: can reach a height of approximately 10 to 20 metres when planted in the ground; when grown in a pot, it usually remains smaller.
3. Trunk: slender, single trunk with clearly visible scars from fallen leaves.
4. Leaves: long, arching, dark green leaves that can grow up to about 1.5 metres in length, creating a strong tropical appearance.
5. Flowers and fruits: produces orange-red betel nuts, traditionally used in various Asian cultures.
Care
1. Light: prefers bright light and thrives best in bright, indirect sunlight. Light shade is tolerated, but at least 6 hours of light per day is recommended for healthy growth.
2. Watering: water regularly, especially during warmer periods. Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid standing water to prevent root rot.
3. Soil: use well-draining soil, preferably a special palm soil. Slightly acidic soil is ideal for this palm.
4. Temperature: grows best at temperatures between 18°C and 30°C. Protect the palm from cold and frost; temperatures below 10°C may cause damage.
5. Fertilisation: fertilise regularly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced fertiliser suitable for palms.
6. Humidity: prefers higher humidity levels. In dry indoor conditions, regular misting or the use of a humidifier can help keep the palm healthy.
