About the Amorphophallus maxwellii (Purple Red) - Bulb - diam. 8-12 cm

Amorphophallus maxwellii (Purple Red)

Amorphophallus maxwellii is a rare tropical tuberous plant from the Araceae family known for its unusual flowering structure and distinctive foliage. Native to Southeast Asia, this species is highly valued by collectors for its exotic appearance and striking bloom. The Purple Red form is particularly notable for its deep red to purple coloured inflorescence.
The plant grows from an underground tuber which may produce a dramatic flower before the foliage appears. After flowering, a large decorative leaf emerges that resembles a small tree, with a single thick stem supporting a branching crown of leaflets.

Characteristics

2. Leaf: produces a large branching leaf that resembles a small tree structure.
3. Flower: develops a striking inflorescence consisting of a spathe and spadix in deep red to purple tones.
4. Growth habit: grows seasonally with a dormant period when the tuber rests underground.
5. Height: can reach approximately 60 to 120 centimetres depending on conditions.
6. Ornamental value: prized by collectors for its unusual bloom and exotic appearance.

3. Soil: prefers airy, well-draining soil rich in organic material.
4. Temperature: grows best between approximately 20 and 30°C.
5. Dormancy: during dormancy reduce watering and keep the tuber relatively dry.
6. Humidity: higher humidity encourages healthy growth.
7. Fertilization: apply light fertilizer during the growing season.
