About the Adonidia merrillii Variegata - M
Adonidia merrillii VariegataThe Adonidia merrillii Variegata is a rare and decorative variety of the well-known Christmas palm, native to the tropical regions of the Philippines. This palm is distinguished by its variegated leaves, combining different shades of green with cream to light yellow accents. This gives the plant a striking and exclusive appearance.
Like the standard Adonidia merrillii, this variety also has a slender, smooth trunk and a compact growth habit. The palm can reach a height of approximately 5 to 7 metres and is suitable for gardens, terraces and as a container plant. In late autumn or early winter, white flowers appear, followed by bright red fruits that strongly contrast with the variegated foliage. This is why this palm is also known as the Christmas palm.
Characteristics
1. Origin: native to the tropical regions of the Philippines.
2. Size: reaches a height of approximately 5 to 7 metres and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
3. Trunk: slender, smooth and greyish in colour, with visible scars from fallen leaves.
4. Leaves: long, arching leaves with a variegated pattern of green and cream to light yellow; evergreen.
5. Flowers and fruits: blooms in late autumn with white flowers, followed by striking red fruits.
Care
1. Light: prefers plenty of light and tolerates light shade. Bright, indirect sunlight brings out the leaf pattern best.
2. Watering: keep the soil lightly moist and avoid prolonged wet roots. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between watering.
3. Soil: well-draining soil is essential. A mix of potting soil and sand or palm soil helps prevent root rot.
4. Temperature: grows best in warm conditions from 20°C. Protect from cold and temperatures below 5°C.
5. Fertilisation: fertilise monthly during the growing season with a balanced palm fertiliser.
6. Maintenance: remove dead or damaged leaves and regularly check for pests such as spider mites or mealybugs.
