About the Bismarckia nobilis - M

Bismarckia nobilis

Bismarckia nobilis is an impressive fan palm native to the open grasslands of Madagascar. This palm is renowned worldwide for its spectacular silver-blue foliage and powerful appearance. With its solitary growth habit and enormous crown, it is considered a true statement palm, best suited for large gardens, parks and landscape projects.
The palm grows with a single, sturdy trunk and forms an almost spherical crown of large fan-shaped leaves. In cultivation, Bismarckia nobilis usually remains somewhat smaller than in the wild, but it still develops into a very large palm. Thanks to its adaptation to dry and hot conditions, it is remarkably resilient and highly tolerant of heat, provided it receives full sun and well-draining soil.

Characteristics

1. Origin: native to the open savannah and grassland regions of Madagascar.
2. Size: can reach a height of approximately 12 to 18 metres in cultivation; even taller in its natural habitat.
3. Trunk: a single, thick trunk with a diameter of up to around 40 cm, showing distinct ringed scars from old leaf bases.
4. Leaves: very large, fan-shaped leaves up to approximately 3 metres in diameter, typically silver-blue to grey-green in colour; a rarer green form also exists.
5. Crown: broad and almost spherical, with a spread of up to about 7 metres.
6. Flowers and seeds: dioecious, meaning separate male and female plants are required for seed production.
7. Growth habit: solitary-growing and not suitable for transplanting once fully established.

Care

1. Light: requires full sun to maintain its silver colour; at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
2. Watering: once established, highly drought-tolerant, though young plants benefit from regular deep watering.
3. Soil: adapts to many soil types as long as they are extremely well-draining; waterlogged soils may cause root rot.
4. Temperature: suited to warm and tropical climates; the silver form can tolerate brief frost down to approximately -4°C to -6°C, with possible leaf damage.
5. Fertilisation: sensitive to deficiencies of potassium, magnesium and boron; use a slow-release fertiliser specifically formulated for palms.
6. Maintenance: only remove completely dead leaves; pruning green foliage weakens the palm and increases pest risk.
7. Positioning: due to its eventual size, only suitable for spacious locations and should be planted well away from buildings and utility lines.
